16 March 2016

The Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) have released a Student Support Information Note (SSIN) regarding changes to HE Undergraduate Student Support in England for EU nationals living in the UK and Islands.

The latest notification - SSIN 06/16 - New eligibility criterion in England for EU nationals with five years residence in the UK – is available in the policy section of the Student Finance England Practitioner website.

An updated Assessing Eligibility Guidance chapter is now available in the guidance chapter section of the Student Finance England Practitioner website.

In line with these changes, the following messages are visible to students on the log-in page of the gov.uk website:

  • EU nationals: Currently, new students in 2016/17 must prove they have been living in the UK for three years before their course start date in order to get living cost support from Student Finance England. From 25 March 2016 this will change to five years.
  • Applications from EU nationals for finance submitted after midnight on 24 March 2016 will be assessed for eligibility based on them proving five years’ residency within the UK.
